Sober living

Aside from the obvious reasons that come with breaking bad habits to live a better life, the benefits of sobriety include improved overall health–both mental and physical. At its core, substance abuse is often a result of self-hatred. Maybe you used to abuse drugs and alcohol because you didn’t like yourself and you were trying to be someone else. Or maybe you hated yourself because you couldn’t stop abusing substances. When you abuse substances for extended periods of time, it exaggerates any mental health issues that you have.

Why sober people are more attractive?

Sober men are more attractive because they're in the game mentally, and they don't generally have the same, to put it delicately, “mechanical problems” that alcohol and other drugs commonly cause. They're generally more attentive, less sloppy and less likely to pass out right after.

Late night benders can result in early morning stops at Jack-in-the-Box or microwave pizzas. Without alcohol in your system however, you have the time, energy and learning capacity to try new recipes. This is especially the case if you’re taking depressants or downers.

Sobriety Is Not The Ultimate Goal. A Good Life Is.

Addiction takes away your joy, relationships, self-esteem, finances, mental wellness, physical health, etc. Personal relationships take a huge impact when struggling with addictions. There’s a good chance that your actions caused immense strain between you and your family and friends during this time. When struggling with an addiction, drugs become all that matters. Think about your relationship with people who meant the world to you before the addiction.

why sobriety is better

For the first time, my sobriety was about someone else. The longer I maintain my sobriety, the more I buy into the ideology that is sobriety, and the more I am beginning to understand it. If you’re fortunate enough to stay sober for long enough, hopefully like me you will start to have these realisations. Addiction recovery can bring new-found peace to people who have stopped their substance abuse. For some, getting sober is about being honest with themselves and others around them for the first time in a long time.

Increased Energy

Meanwhile, there’s nothing quite like a good night’s sleep after a full day of being sober. When you’re sober, your body is restored and your mind refreshed. Your brain is able to operate at it’s proper speed, meaning you get your REM sleep, your body restores its muscles, and you start dreaming again. Recovering from addiction also teaches you about yourself.

why sobriety is better

I needed the mental fog to lift so that I could focus more on the work that I had to do. Because substance abuse disorders can affect sleep patterns, stopping substance abuse can indirectly improve sober house your focus by getting the recommended amount of nightly shut-eye. When you have consistent sleep and are sans hangover, you benefit by having a new level of clarity and improved focus.

More Time.

Individuals recovering from substance use disorders often believe their perceived image is irreversibly damaged. However, second chances through rehabilitation are proving possible. Sobriety Promotes a Clear and Healthy Mind – Chronic substance use takes its toll on brain function. Certain substances interfere with how our brain neurons send, receive, and process signals via neurotransmitters. Drugs like marijuana and heroin activate neurons in a way that mimics our brain’s chemicals, leading to abnormal messages traveling through these pathways. If you want to repair strained or broken relationships, you must approach them cautiously.

why sobriety is better

Maybe not, especially if your substance use has become a problem. Getting and staying sober can change the way you look at yourself. You won’t have to think about yourself as a person with no self-control or someone who says stupid things when drunk. You’ll also build your self-esteem by sticking with your decision to stay sober. Have you ever woken up unable to remember what happened the night before?

You’ll be able to enjoy life

Sober living allows you to regain the positive aspects of your life, to access and experience them wholeheartedly. Without drugs or alcohol, you will begin to understand feelings of appreciation, love, support, joy, connection. You will create moments with loved ones, remember them, and hold them closely.

  • When you commit to sobriety, you can actually solve your problems instead of ignoring them.
  • As you continue to live a sober life, setting these boundaries will become more natural and you will reap the benefits daily.
  • On the other hand, alcohol withdrawal symptoms can quickly become deadly if delirium tremens kick in.
  • I knew I had a lot of difficult work to do with her and I didn’t have the confidence in the strength of my sobriety before then to take on the challenges I knew laid ahead of me.
